At David’s Heavy Duty Tool Sales, we know an engine stand is one of the most indispensable tools in your shop. An engine stand makes it easier, safer, and faster to transport an engine. It also supports and rotates the engine for easy access when rebuilding or making repairs. This blog post will review the common repairs you can make using an engine stand.

Why Use an Engine Stand

Removing an engine can be dangerous without proper support. You can use a hoist to remove the engine and mount it on the stand, then rotate it to the desired position for easy access to all areas of the engine. This makes it possible to work on the engine from multiple angles, increasing visibility and accessibility.

A stand holds the engine at a comfortable height, making repairs more ergonomic and efficient. This can save time and help minimize aches and pains from working in odd positions.

Our engine stands can be used for various engine sizes, makes, and models when paired with the proper mounting adapter plate. They can be handy for many different repairs including fixing engine leaks and replacing bearings.

Fix Engine Leaks

Engine leaks can harm the overall performance and longevity of a diesel engine. If left unrepaired, engine leaks can damage different components of your engine. Engine oil lubricates the pistons and other moving parts, helping to keep them cool and friction-free. Leaks can cause the oil level to drop, leading to excessive wear on the engine.

Leaks can also allow oil to contaminate the fuel system, reducing the engine’s fuel efficiency and potentially causing clogs in the fuel system. Before fixing any leaks, clean the engine and surrounding area. This lets you see the source of the leak and prevents dirt and debris from getting into the engine during the repair process.

Replace Engine Mounts

Engine mounts can wear out over time, leading to increased vibrations and damage to the engine. The purpose of engine mounts is to keep the engine properly aligned with the transmission and other drive components. They absorb noise generated by engine vibration, so it doesn’t transfer into the passenger compartment. Worn engine mounts can lead to serious damage and greatly reduce the performance of the vehicle.

Replace Engine Bearings

Over time, engine bearings can wear down due to friction and heat, leading to engine damage, reduced oil pressure, and leaks. Engine bearings also provide a smooth and stable surface for the crankshaft to rotate on, providing an efficient transfer of power from the pistons to the wheels. By replacing engine bearings, you can help extend the life of your engine, improve its performance, and prevent expensive engine damage.

Install New Pistons and Rings

Worn or damaged pistons and rings can allow excess engine oil to enter the combustion chamber, reducing engine compression and performance. Replacing them can help extend the life of the engine.

Use a high-quality engine assembly lube to lubricate the piston skirts, rings, and cylinder walls to help prevent damage during the break-in process. Use a ring compressor and a torque wrench for a proper and secure installation and to avoid damage to the new components.
