A heavy duty floor jack is made of several components that allow it to lift heavy objects like vehicles, machinery, and other equipment. These jacks use hydraulic fluid to increase their leverage. Handle and Socket

The handle is the component used to move the jack from one place to another and to raise and lower it. It guides the jack into position under the object you’re attempting to lift. After you position the jack correctly, lift and lower the handle to push the fluid into the cylinder. This motion causes the jack to lift the load. As you apply more pressure to the handle, a heavier load can be lifted based on the rating of the jack. The rating is provided by weight. You can find 3-ton, 4-ton, and heavier jacks.

On a heavy duty floor jack, the handle is placed into the socket, which is mounted to the jack frame. As the socket moves up and down from the motion of the handle, it operates the pistons. This motion is necessary to increase pressure and raise the jack’s arm, allowing it to lift the object.

Piston Assemblage and Cylinders

The piston assemblage is made up of two parts. The plunger piston is located in the plunger cylinder. It’s responsible for allowing the fluid to move from the reservoir into the plunger cylinder, which happens when the handle is lifted. It moves backward when someone lifts the handle and the socket moves. When you move the handle back down, the plunger piston moves forward, pushing the fluid from the plunger cylinder to the ram cylinder.

The ram piston is wider than the plunger piston, but it acts in the same way in the ram cylinder. Once the fluid reaches the ram cylinder, it allows the pressure from the fluid to build up. When the jack is lowered, the ram piston pushes the fluid back out into the plunger cylinder.

Reservoir and Valves

One of the primary components of a heavy duty floor jack is the reservoir, which holds the hydraulic fluid when the jack isn’t in use. The reservoir is hidden inside the jack’s metal frame and must be sealed to prevent the fluid from leaking out. This component attaches to the piston plunger. When the handle is lowered, the fluid leaves the plunger cylinder for the ram cylinder. When enough pressure has built up in the ram cylinder, it causes the object to be lifted.

After you’ve finished lifting the heavy object, you’ll use the release valve to allow the jack to lower the object being held up. The release valve causes the check valve to open, which lets the fluid move backward from its normal direction. The jack begins to lower the object at this point. A knob may be attached to the release valve, which you can turn in a counter-clockwise direction to release the fluid back into the reservoir. A screw plug is located on the reservoir, so you can add more fluid as part of regular maintenance.

Arms and Wheels

The lifting arm is the part that lifts the saddle of the jack. It raises as the pressure in the ram cylinder increases. This part is made of metal to be less susceptible to damage. The leveling arm is located on the underside of the lifting arm. It acts as a support to the lifting arm to help hold up the heavy object.

Caster wheels are a functional addition that help move the jack into place. They rotate 360 degrees, giving the jack more mobility. Because of this feature, you can maneuver the jack into tight spaces, which can be helpful if you’re working in a small shop.

Saddle and Cover Plate

The saddle is the component that holds the object being lifted. It may also be referred to as a bearing pad. You will place it under a solid part of the object, such as the axle of a vehicle. Stabilizing the saddle under a strong area helps prevent damage to whatever you’re lifting. It also decreases the risk of the object falling off the jack, which can cause someone to get injured.

The cover plate is a metal component on a heavy duty floor jack. This component protects the cylinders and piston assemblage from damage. The cover plate can be removed to give access to the interior parats of the jack when you need to make repairs. Screws may attach it to the jack base.
